Our Association is involved in many technically complex, politically sensitive and community based projects and initiatives, and has a proactive relationship with various levels of government on numerous issues. Below are some past issues we have worked on.

Economic Impact Study

In 2011 UDI engaged the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) to provide an Economic and Fiscal Impact Study of Private Development Construction in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Nova Scotia for the years 2006 through 2010. The report details the important contribution development makes to the local economy.

Interim Development Controls

Status: Archived

In September 2016, Halifax introduced a report recommending that HRM request the ability to implement interim development controls from the Province. UDI was one of a number of organizations that protested against this proposal. The report was presented to Council in 2016 and was defeated.

In 2014 Halifax undertook the first five-year review of its Regional Plan. UDI was an important part of the industry review of the revised plan, and in June 2014 we endorsed the updated plan.

Centre Plan Review

Status: Archived

HRM have released Package B of their Centre Plan. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Centre Plan – Package B public engagement process and project timeline. The Centre Plan Package B public consultations are currently underway – find out more at www.centreplan.ca.

Package A was finalized and made law in late 2019.
