Important Relief Measures For Businesses:
Federal Business Aid Measures:
Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) – This program has been expanded to include applicable businesses that paid between $20 000 and 1.5 million dollars in total payroll in 2019. To apply contact any chartered bank or Credit Union.
Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) – This program will in combination with the provincial government, aid in rent support for businesses most impacted by the pandemic. This program’s purpose is to provide loans; including forgivable ones to commercial property owners to allow them to lower or forgo the rent of small businesses for the months of April – June.
Provincial Business Aid Measures:
Small Business Impact Grant – This program is for small businesses, non-profits and charities that have been ordered to close or substantially curtail their operations due to COVID-19. This one time grant is equal to 15% of your sales revenue from either April 2019 or February 2020, up to a maximum of $5 000. You can choose which month is used to calculate this number. Worker Emergency Bridge Fund – This program is for workers laid off or otherwise out of work on or after March 16th, 2020 that are not eligible for Employment Insurance. This one time $1000 payment is to help the worker meet their basic needs as soon as possible. It is combinable with Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and is considered taxable income for 2020.
Municipal Business Aid Measures:
Halifax Regional Municipality Tax Deferral – The municipality has voted to defer the interim tax bill due date from April 30th 2020 to June 1st 2020, suspend Non-Sufficient Fund fees and reduce the interest rate charged on arrears to 10% per annum. HRM is asking that those able to pay their taxes continue to do so to prevent future issues within the municipality.
